Planned Exhibition: The International Maritime Museum in Hamburg

In the course of the realisation of the theme world “THE HANSEATIC LEAGUE in EUROPE” the Peter Tamm Sen. foundation is planning an unusual and rare exhibition on the European aspect of the Hanseatic League at HANSA-PARK.

From the Hanseatic League to a global trade network; from the cog ship to the giant post-Panamax container ships: the International Maritime Museum Hamburg (IMMH) tells the story of 3,000 years of seafaring.

Such, visitors to the 16,000 square metre large exhibition will not only get to know how merchant guilds formed the Hanseatic League in the 11th century and how growing national interests in the 17th century contributed to the demise of the alliance.

They will also get an inside view of the field of marine research or they can marvel at ships’ models made from gold, ivory, bones and amber at the treasure chamber.

Just like the new presentation on the Hanseatic League in Europe at HANSA-PARK wants to introduce history to young people, we too want to rouse people’s interest and get visitors to think about the topic,” explains the museum’s founding father, Prof. Peter Tamm. “I’ve been totally enthusiastic about shipping and the seas since I was a child. Over the years, I have also grown fond of the history behind these topics. Everything we experience here and now has a story to tell and will one day become history. Let me quote the Old Greek masters: ‘He who doesn’t know his origins doesn’t know who he is now. And he, who doesn’t know who he is now, doesn’t know where he will go.’ I consider history the very basis of human life.
